Grade 8 Humanities – using Quick Reference and EBSCO for research

When completing research for any subject don’t forget to start with the resources in your library – log in to Destiny and see what books are available.

Quick Reference Section - Encyclopedia, Dictionary, Atlases

Quick Reference Section – Encyclopedia, Dictionary, Atlases

One area that you may not be used to using is the Quick Reference Section. The encyclopedias here can provide some very useful information. It is best when using an encyclopedia to go to the last volume first – the index volume and search for your topic there. The index will let you know which volumes and page numbers to go to for information on your topic.

Our online encyclopedia Encyclopedia Britannica may also provide useful information as well. Password information is available in the library and on the library pages in your student planner. Choose your search terms carefully – here I used “Imperialism Nigeria” to find some useful information.

EBSCO is a collection of online periodicals and journals and is useful to more in-depth research Username and password information is available in the library and on the library pages in your student planner. When you log in select the database called EBSCOhost Research Databases. Before you enter your search words you will need to select which databases you are interested in – I suggest Advanced Placement Source, Funk and Wagnells New World Encyclopedia, MAS Ultra – School Edition, Middle Search Plus and TOPICsearch.

Click continue and then add your search words. I suggest for this assignment you write “Country History Imperialism” so if you are researching Nigeria your search will be “Nigeria History Imperialism“.

Once you have your search results you should further refine them to Full Text only then the articles you get will be able to be downloaded and saved to be read later. See the gallery below to see the screen shots of the process described. Mrs Bond and Mr Johnson can help you use this great research tool.

Grade 2 Finding a "Just right book."

This week at Marmara Campus we looked at three strategies to use to help us choose a “Just right Book” from the library.

We learned TWO helpful words when it comes to choosing books

First word – browse

[brouz] Show IPA verb, browsed, brows·ing, noun.

verb (used with object)

1.to eat, nibble at, or feed on (leaves, tender shoots, or other soft vegetation). like a giraffe does

2.to graze; pasture on.

3. to look through or glance at casually: He’s browsing the shelves for something to read.

When we browse for something to read we look at the displays, look at the shelves, take our time and look at many books. We c

an use our shelf markers to hold the place where the book was so if we don’t like it we can return it to the right spot.

Second word – peruse

[puh-rooz] Show IPA

verb (used with object), pe·rused, pe·rus·ing.

1.

to read through with thoroughness or care: to peruse a report.

2.

to read.

3.

to survey or examine in detail.
When we peruse the book we can go to a page and use the five finger method to decide if the book is too hard. Our students practiced this today.
We can also use Destiny to narrow our search for a book by using the Narrow Search menu and Interest level. Our students also tried using this feature on Destiny.

We will be working on choosing “Just right Books” all year.

Grade 6 Up to date information

Like all ‘scarce’ resources sometimes people have to dig deeper or go further to find good quality materials for their projects and products. In research you should do the same.

To find up to date resources on Destiny you just need to use the “Narrow Search” menu.

This “Narrow Search” menu is available for library resources, use “Date of publication”  and the web sites tab, use “Grade level”.

When you exit Quest on Destiny you can go to the “Home” tab. There are great links on this page to Encyclopedia Britannica online and EBSCO electronic journals and newspapers. When you use EBSCO try the Primary and Middle Search via Searchasaurus database. This has articles from magazine and newspapers you can use.

When you have searched the database you can ask for the results to be sorted by “Date descending” and then the results will come up with the most recent articles first.

Another useful EBSCO database is the ELL English Language Learner which give articles in English and will translate them to other languages.

Try using search engines OTHER than a straight Google search. 2lingual allows you to search in two languages at once.

Teoma gives ideas for related searches on the right had side of the results page.

Keep track of ALL the resources you use for your Bibliography. Happy searching.

Grade 9 Science

START with your library everytime you have a research assignment. Log into DESTINY and check print, DVD and website resources. Use our online databases – EBSCO and Encyclopedia Britannica online. The librarians can help you with the passwords.

Internet Detective is a great tutorial for learning how to wise up to the web. Take some time and go through               the excellent tips it has.

Remember the WWW of checking sources on the Internet WHO, WHAT, WHEN?

If in doubt you can check information using Snopes and Scambusters Remember if in doubt – do not use the website.

For our work today please assess these websites using the criteria sheet Mrs Bond gives you

Frequently Asked Questions About Dihydrogen Monoxide

What are polymers?

Addition polymers

Ensure you keep good records of the sources you use. EasyBib is a useful online bibliography creator. For intext citations the Purdue Guide is very good.

Grade 4 Using ebooks and resource lists on Destiny Library Catalogue

Today all of grade 4 were using our Library Catalogue to use ebooks. First they have to go to our library catalogue Destiny which is available to them at school and at home https://iics.follettdestiny.com ~Each student has his or her own username and password to access the extra features of the library catalogue. They need to select Marmara Campus and then login. If they have trouble with the password they can get help at the library to reset it.

To find our ebooks the students used the search term “Space” or “Planets” and then went to the menu on the left  to narrow their search. They go to format and select “electronic books” from there they can select the ebook that will help them. The ebooks we have purchased to support the Units of Inquiry can be used by everyone at the same time (unlimited access). Other ebooks – for recreational reading have limited access of one person reading the book at a time. Again all ebooks are available to our students anytime and anywhere they have an Internet connection. They must use their Destiny Password to access the book through our catalogue system.

The other feature of Destiny we explored today was the Resource Lists. These are available through “Quest Home” Resource Lists can be created by students, teachers and library staff. They list the resources we have available for certain topics. Today we explored the resource List “Grade 4 Space” This list has resources from our library about the Unit of Inquiry and web sites that relate to the topic but have been pre selected by grade level by teachers.

Destiny and our ebooks can be accessed on any computer. You can also download the free app for destiny from the itunes store or Google Play. Please follow this link for more information and for access to the apps. Any questions or for more information please contact Mrs Bond abond@iics.k12.tr

Grade 10 Physics

Once you have chosen your area of interest try doing some searches using key words. You will need to know some of the laws of physics which relate to your area of interest.

Car safety physics – some useful sites – word of caution some sites found in a Google Search were created by high school students like yourselves. To check on the validity of a website you are using you can use the QUICK model.

The Physics of Car Safety gives four main areas of information: crumple zone, air bags, seat belts and tyres. Useful terms and a glossary for further key word searches

Georgia State University Hyper Physics site looks at seat belts

Physics classroom site has the three laws of Newton

You tube has some interesting videos – try searching Newton’s laws.

For statistics and comparative information see nation master which allows you to collect and compare statistics or Google Public Data which uses information from the World Bank statistics.

Don’t forget to document your resources. Set up a new project on easybib
