At Marmara the students were read to by older students in grades 5 &#8211; 9 and at Hisar the students we read to by parents and teachers. When we didn&#8217;t have the books in the right language we went online to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.childrenslibrary.org\/\">International Children&#8217;s Digital Library<\/a> &#8211; this is a great website for books in many languages<\/p>\n<p>We saw students enjoying being with other students who shared their language. We saw students enjoying stories, asking questions and chatting about the stories in their own languages.<\/p>\n<p>Researcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdkrashen.com\/\">Stephen Krashen<\/a>\u00a0has found that<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing literacy in first language\u00a0key to developing literacy in new\u00a0language<\/li>\n<li>When teachers read aloud and\u00a0discuss stories with students,\u00a0students read more<\/li>\n<li>Students who are read aloud to\u00a0check out more library books<\/li>\n<li>Hearing stories and discussing\u00a0them encourages independent\u00a0reading<\/li>\n<li>Hearing stories has a direct impact\u00a0on vocabulary development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Krashen, Stephen D. <i>The Power of Reading: Insights from the Research<\/i>.
